From there we zoom into the intimate space of a bathroom for the first scene of Mother’s Spring (Mùa xuân của mẹ), where a daughter literally and figuratively struggles in their áo dài, not realizing that a first generation mother also needs grace. Just as you get a chance to come up for air, you will find yourself tossed into a genre-bending roller coaster. There, you must Close the Eye to See the unspeakable truth that a mourned lover must face as he is haunted by horror and spirituality. We then round out the set with our final two unscripted films which give voice to Intergenerational Stories, and explore various viewpoints of all ages where love is really love and acceptance means truly accepting not only others but yourself. Between Us gives a rare glimpse into older lesbians who paved the way, supportive parents who raise signs along with their children, and the community forms and uplifts as a result. Building upon his earlier documentary A Camp Unknown (2023), Asio Liu Chihsiung’s Strangers and Their Babies covers the lives of four people of Vietnamese descent as they retrace their respective family’s dangerous journey across open waters from Vietnam to Taiwan. Strangers and Their Babies is a production of Taiwan’s Public Television Service (PTS). The film’s four subjects are scattered across the world, having lived most of their lives in the United States or Taiwan. Their sense of belonging and identity is inextricably drawn from their families’ flights from Vietnam – which, for our subjects, casts psychological shadows similar to, but different from, most Boat People’s personal histories. 🎥 “The Very Thought of You” is set to screen at #VietFilmFest2026! 🎬These four films look at love (or one’s idea of what love is) at different stages: its beginnings, the point of betrayal, and in death and separation. 🎟️ Tickets are officially live—secure your seats today and be part of the story. viet-film-fest.carrd.co🎬 We open with budding beginnings in Nguyễn Năng Hải An’s 5011 (which helped the director earn a spot at USC’s School of Cinematic Arts). There, a Vietnamese high school boy, unsure how to act or speak around his crush, seeks advice from a friend who might not be of much help. Empty (Trống), directed by Mai Hoài Nguyễn Tuấn Anh (or “Luey”) follows. Loosely adapted from Haruki Murakami’s short story “Kino”, the protagonist returns home to find his wife having an affair. He flees the scene, headed for anywhere but home – his ultimate destination will feature curious moments symbolizing unresolved feelings. A lack of emotional resolution carries over into the closing half of this set. The animated short Water Girl (Fille d’eau), directed by Sandra Desmazières (VFF 2023’s Flowing Home), finds an elderly freedive fisher reminiscing about loved ones now far away. As a reversal of Orpheus and Eurydice, Nghiêm Quỳnh Trang’s Visiting Heaven Gate sees a daughter and mother make an ascending pilgrimage in hopes of seeing their father and husband, respectively, one last time.
