Synopsis

Resourceful African American comic book creators, Joe Thompson and Chris Adams of "Fracture Comics,” confront challenges and stereotypes while pursuing their dreams. They risk their personal lives and health to pursue their passion, while also transforming the manga comic book industry.

Khai Thu Nguyen

Director's Biography

Khai Thu Nguyen is a Vietnamese American filmmaker based in the San Francisco Bay Area. Born in Sai Gon, Vietnam, she grew up in San Diego, California. Khai's documentary short Table Stakes on two African American comic book creators is showing at numerous festivals and was nominated Best Short Film at the 2019 San Diego Black Film Festival. Her narrative short Alexa and May about her mom and the Amazon Alexa won Best Experimental Short Film 2018 at The World’s International Film Festival. Khai directed multinational theater productions Romeo and Juliet in Saigon and Another Midsummer Night’s Dream in Ho Chi Minh City joining artists from Norway, US and Vietnam; and staged plays at Berkeley Art Museum, UC Berkeley, Stanford University, UC Santa Cruz, and other galleries in the Bay Area. Her theater productions and research were supported by Fulbright-Hays, UC Pacific Rim, Royal Norwegian Embassy, and Nordic Black Theatre. Her publications on Vietnamese and American theater appeared in multiple journals. She received her Ph.D. in Performance Studies from UC Berkeley.
