There is a saying that, “If we don’t tell OUR stories, other people will tell it for us.” When we think about the dominant narratives that have been circulated in the mainstream media about Vietnamese people, you’ll notice that the voices are often not our own. Napalm and “me love you long time” are not the only stories we have to offer.
That is the reason that Viet Film Fest exists. With the mission of supporting and celebrating Vietnamese voices in cinema, Viet Film Fest provides a nurturing environment for artists to grow and an educational space for audiences to learn about the nuanced Vietnamese experience.
Viet Film Fest emphasizes developing the next generation of Vietnamese artists and stories through our special programming dedicated to youth. The Youth in Motion Program was started two years ago because we saw a gap in filmmaking education and resources for our community. On top of that, it was evident that there was a desire from young folks who wanted to express themselves through the camera. Youth in Motion provides that space to develop these young talents through workshops with skilled professionals in the industry. Moreover, we provide volunteer opportunities, educational panels, and free movie screenings to high school and college students during the festival.
As an all-volunteer organization, we need financial backing in order to ensure these core Viet Film Fest programs can continue. It is through your support that voices like ours can be heard.
