Cinema Symposium 4

UCLA’s Vietnamese Language and Culture (VNLC) and the Vietnamese American Arts and Letters Association (VAALA) partner up to present the fourth biennial Cinema Symposium titled “Filmmaking: the Good, the Bad, the Ugly,” featuring nine distinguished guest panelists who have contributed in raising the recent Viet Film Wave.  Cinema Symposium 4 will be held on Sunday, April 13, 2008 at Northwest Auditorium on the UCLA campus.  Admission is free and open to the public. Read more...

ViFF 2007: Sharing Visions - a brief look at the third biennial film festival

Carrying the theme of Sharing Visions, the Vietnamese International Film Festival (ViFF) 2007 took place from April 12 – 15 and April 19 – 22 at the University of California, Irvine (UCI), University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and Westminster.  ViFF 2007 attracted an enthusiastic crowd of more than 4000 people to all events including screenings, receptions, and symposiums.  ViFF 2007 screened a record number of films: 51 films by some of the most prominent filmmakers of Vietnamese descent from around the world including Canada, France, Germany, Israel, Poland, Vietnam and the U.S. Read more...

THE JOURNEY OF VAAN by DUKI DRIOR
Duki Dror's documentary, The Journey of Vaan Nguyen, is a refugee story about homeland and exile, but one told through the unique lens of a Vietnamese family living in Israel. As in many refugee stories, Vaan’s father lived through the chaos of war and endured the horrors of a re-education camp before escaping to Viet Nam by boat. However, instead of being picked up by American or French authorities, Vaan’s father is rescued by an Israeli cargo ship, which ultimately leads him to forge a new life in the ancient port city of Yafo (also known as Jaffa), just south of Tel Aviv. His five daughters, including Vaan, grow up learning Hebrew, retaining only rudimentary Vietnamese language skills. Read more...

Nguyen Thi Minh Ngoc is a writer, theatre director, playwright, filmmaker, and educator. She graduated with a degree in Theatre, specializing in directing and actors' training from the Film & Theatre College of Ho Chi Minh City. Nguyen has also been trained in traditional acting at the Tran Huu Trang Theatre. At the Ho Chi Minh City College of Theatre and Cinema, Nguyen has taught acting and drama. Read more...

The Vietnamese International Film Festival (ViFF) is proud to collaborate with the Center for Asian American Media (CAAM) to co-present films by diasporic Vietnamese filmmakers in the 25th Annual San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival (SFIAAFF), which will run from March 15-25 in 3 Bay Area cities: San Francisco, Berkeley and San Jose.
