Director's Biography

Kady Le is a screenwriter living in Los Angeles. Hailing from the Bay Area, she grew up as the daughter of Vietnamese refugees in the Little Saigon neighbourhood of San Jose. She is a senior undergrad majoring in Film and Television at the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television. She is the recipient of the Peter Stark Memorial Scholarship for outstanding artistic merit and finalist for the Dustin Lance Black Award for Diversity and Inclusion. As a queer Asian American woman, Kady sought out mentors in the film industry that championed diversity. She began her journey as an Assistant to the ShowCreator of “Nice” (created by Naomi Ko, directed by Andrew Ahn), which recently premiered at Tribeca Film Festival. She has also worked as a Story Development intern at Hasbro Studios.

Director's Statement

At its core, “Like Mother, Like Daughter” is a coming of age story, a mother-daughter story, and a story about acceptance. I wanted to portray an authentic story between a trans woman and her immigrant mother. As a queer woman and a daughter of Vietnamese refugees, I heavily reasonated with my main character, Robyn. Like her, I too am a queer woman that has a very complicated with my immigrant mother. My goal with this film was to empower the trans Vietnamese Americans in our community, whose stories are virtually invisible. “Like Mother Like Daughter” helps raise awareness while also humanizes the Vietnamese American trans experience.
