Farewell Halong is a personal story of one family that speaks to displaced migrants and people everywhere. Nguyen Van Cuong lives with his wife, mother, and son on a water cabin built on Ha Long Bay, the UNESCO World Heritage site found in northern Vietnam. Despite the poverty here, life is simple and there is a spirit of community among those who follow the daily rhythm of the sea.

But when the government plans to relocate this “floating village” to protect the bay from pollution and increase tourism, a major dilemma is raised: Does the family take this opportunity (and get a better education for their son) or risk the life they’ve built over many generations? There is little choice as all residents are eventually forced into public housing on land, which begins to create many problems and deteriorate social bonds. Capturing the human dignity found in survival, Farewell Halong reminds us that no matter where we are, the fight for a home is an ongoing struggle.

Screening of the film will precede a special panel discussion on “The Journey Home: Vietnamese Immigration + Identity.”

Tạm Biệt Hạ Long là câu chuyện riêng của một gia đình nói về di dân và những người bị buộc phải rời khỏi nơi cư trú ở khắp nơi. Nguyễn Văn Cường sống cùng vợ, mẹ, và con trai trong ngôi nhà nổi trên Vịnh Hạ Long, Di sản Thế Giới UNESCO ở miền Bắc, Việt Nam. Dẫu nghèo khó, đời sống nơi đây giản dị và có tinh thần cộng đồng giữa những con người sống theo nhịp điệu hàng ngày của biển.

Nhưng khi chính phủ lên kế hoạch tái định cư “làng nổi” này để bảo vệ vịnh khỏi ô nhiễm và thúc đẩy du lịch, tình thế tiến thoái lưỡng nan đặt ra: Gia đình có nắm lấy cơ hội này (và có được sự giáo dục tốt hơn cho con trai họ) hay mạo hiểm lối sống họ đã tạo dựng nên qua nhiều thế hệ? Có rất ít lựa chọn vì tất cả người dân cuối cùng đều buộc phải chuyển vào khu nhà ở xã hội trên đất liền, từ đó bắt đầu tạo ra nhiều vấn đề và làm suy giảm những liên hệ xã hội. Ghi nhận nhân phẩm tìm thấy trong sự sống sót, Tạm Biệt Hạ Long nhắc nhở chúng ta rằng dù ở đâu, cuộc chiến tìm nơi sinh sống là sự vật lộn thường xuyên.

Sau buổi chiếu phim sẽ có thảo luận về sự buộc phải di rời, nơi sinh sống, di cư, và bản sắc.
