Touch is a romantic drama. A mechanic looking to save his faltering marriage strikes up an unlikely friendship with a shy Vietnamese-American manicurist, who not only cleans his greasy hands but also gives him advice about his love life. This sensual film explores the sense of touch and its emotional impact - how with just a simple touch, we can reveal our deepest longings and even heal a wounded soul.
Making her cinematic debut in Touch, actress Porter Lynn will pleasantly surprise audiences with her mature poise and unassuming strength in portraying Tam. Her moving performance won her Best Actress award at Boston International Film Festival. She is costarring with John Ruby, Melinda Bennett, Long Nguyen (Journey from the Fall), and Hiep Thi Le (Heaven & Earth).

In America, 75% of the nail salons are owned and operated by Vietnamese. The nail salon industry provides countless job opportunities for Vietnamese immigrants, but their stories have never been told on-screen. For the first time, we have a film that poignantly depicts the lives of women working in a typical nail salon. This is the inspiration for the story, written by Minh Duc Nguyen (also making his directorial debut), who sees the nail salon as the perfect setting to tell a multicultural story. But the movie also touches on universal themes such as love, loss, and the importance of human contact.

Festival Welcomes the North American Premieres of
Oh Seong-yun’s “Leafie, A Hen Into the Wild” and Loy Arcenas’ “Niño”

Orange, CA (October 31, 2011) - Chapman University’s Dodge College of Film and Media Arts, recognized as one of the premiere film schools in the United States, in continued partnership with South Korea’s Busan International Film Festival (BIFF), Asia’s largest film festival, today announced the official program for the upcoming Busan West Asian Film Festival, November 11-13 in Orange, Calif.

Busan West 2011 will feature eleven feature films from five countries: China, Korea, Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam. Three of those films will make their North American premiere at Busan West including Bong Joon-ho’s “The Host 3D,” the Korean animation feature “Leafie, A Hen Into the Wild” directed by Oh Seong-yun and Filipino drama “Niño” directed by Loy Arcenas, winner of the New Currents Award from BIFF 2011.

Celebrated writer/director Bong Joon-ho (Mother, Memories of Murder), will receive the Busan West Icon Award and present his hit film “The Host 3D” to open Busan West on Friday, November 11th, following the Icon award ceremony. Bong Joon-ho will also participate in an exclusive Busan West Master Class where he will discuss writing and directing with Dodge College students and offer Q&A’s with the audience.

Award-winning director Feng Xiaogang’s (Assembly, If You Are the One, A Sign) Chinese drama “AfterShock” will close Busan West on Sunday, November 13th, following the closing night reception.

Over the course of three days, Dodge College will host a showcase of contemporary Asian films selected primarily from the 2011 Busan International Film Festival by Dodge College Professor Nam Lee, an expert in Pan-Asian film. The Busan West program features a special opening night event and a closing night reception, all designed to showcase Korean and Asian culture through food, music, and décor.

IRVINE - The 5th biennial Vietnamese International Film Festival (ViFF) ended with an exciting closing night at UC Irvine in which awards were presented for best feature, best short film, and, for the first time, best actor and best actress. The eight-day film festival drew over 4,000 audience members, making it the well-attended ViFF yet. Filmmakers from Australia, Canada and Vietnam were present at ViFF which has been a unique forum showcasing works of filmmakers of Vietnamese descents from all over the globe since 2003.

Highlighted events at ViFF 2011 include the jam-packed opening night featuring SAIGON ELECTRIC (Directed by Stephane Gauger), the Spotlight Night honoring Vietnamese Australian filmmaker, Khoa Do, and presenting his award-winning film, MOTHER FISH. ViFF High School Day at Bowers Museum welcomed more than one hundred students from Westminster High School and a panel discussion on “Expanding the Audience Base” gave audience members an opportunity to dialogue openly about the film industry with prominent, international filmmakers and producers. The sold-out sneak preview of TOUCH (Directed by Minh Duc Nguyen) was an audience-favorite and the Closing Day capped off the stellar film festival with powerful films FLOATING LIVES (Directed by Nguyen Phan Quang Binh) and BI, DON’T BE AFRAID! How did the idea for the script of Bi, Đừng Sợ! come to you? How did you scout the location for the film?

The idea for the film came from those endless “nhậu” sessions that I had with my friends years ago. It came from those late nights, lying on the sofa and thinking about my life. In this film, both the scent of beer and a little bit of tears permeates. But sometimes there is also a light smile.

I started scouting for locations with cinematographer Phạm Quang Minh and film producer Nguyễn Hoàng Điệp a year before we filmed the first scene. Those were the most romantic and leisurely days before the intense film production process kicked in. The location scouting process also helped me film some wonderful scenes that were not originally planned in the script.

How did you cast the main characters (Bi, mom, aunt, father, and grandfather) in Bi, Đừng Sợ! ?

The fundamental casting for the film was completed two years before the filming began. Because of that I had a lot of time to interact and work closely with the actors. Everyone knew exactly what they needed to do in the film, except Bi. As for Bi, the first time that I met him (then 4 years old) I casted him immediately. I never let him rehearse any acting prior to the filming and only put him to work when we filmed. I always told Bi that making a movie is like playing. He could play whatever games he wanted and needn’t worry about how to act. And indeed he played his games very well, as a matter of fact, so well that there were scenes when he made the whole crew sweat because he won us over.

The characters in Chơi Vơi (script by Phan Đăng Di) and Bi, Đừng Sợ! all have repressed sexual desires. Please share your perspective as you explored these aspects of the characters in depth.

Those are also my own dissatisfactions. I simply bring my own experiences to the big screen so that everyone knows. When I express these feelings, I feel very natural, unloaded.

The women in Chơi Vơi and Bi, Đừng Sợ! possess very strong personalities, meanwhile the men are weak and selfish. Please say a little bit about the way you built the characters.

In my films, the men are often hedonistic and live for themselves more than for others, often times they are like children, and not as strong as the women. The women are mothers, and they often have to take care of the children, including the real children and the big children who are their husbands or lovers.

I am preparing for a new film called “Father and son and…” - a tragic comedy with a sprinkle of menace. I just finished casting in Sài Gòn with cinematographer Phạm Quang Minh, where we had the pleasure of working with many inspiring faces, and thanks to that we feel more energized to work.

In addition, I will also be the producer for a film by Nguyễn Hoàng Điệp called “Đập Cánh Giữa Không Trung” that will begin filming this year. Điệp was my producer in “Bi, Đừng Sợ!” When making my film, I “tormented” her a lot, now this time around it’s probably my turn to be “tormented” by her.

Ý tưởng cho kịch bản cuốn phim Bi, Đừng Sợ! đến với anh như thế nào? Anh chọn cảnh quay cho phim như thế nào?

Ý tưởng cho cuốn phim đến trong những buổi chiều ngồi nhậu triền miên của tôi với bạn bè nhiều năm trước. Đến từ những đêm về khuya, nằm trên sofa và nghĩ về đời mình. Trong phim này có cả hơi bia lẫn một chút nước mắt. Nhưng nhiều khi cũng là một nụ cừi mỉm…

Tôi bắt đầu cùng quay phim Phạm Quang Minh và nhà sản xuất Nguyễn Hoàng Điệp đi chọn cảnh từ một năm trước ngày quay. Đó là những ngày lãng mạn và nhàn tản cuối cùng trước khi bước vào giai đoạn căng thẳng của quá trình sản xuất. Quá trình chọn cảnh cũng giúp tôi có được một số cảnh quay tuyệt vời vốn trước đó không được trù liệu trong kịch bản.

Anh tuyển các vai chính (Bi, mẹ, cô, ông bố, và ông nội) trong Bi, Đừng Sợ! như thế nào?

Việc chọn diễn viên cơ bản hoàn tất 2 năm trước khi phim được quay. Vì thế tôi có khả thời gian để trao đổi và làm việc kĩ với diễn viên. Mọi người đều biết rõ mình phải làm gì trong phim, trừ Bi. Với Bi, lần đầu tiên tôi gặp cậu (4 tuổi) đã chọn cậu ngay. Tôi không hề cho cậu tập trước gì hết, chỉ đến khi quay mới để cậu làm việc. Tôi cũng luôn nói với Bi làm phim giống như là đi chơi thôi. Con cứ chơi những trò con muốn và đừng quan tâm đến việc phải diễn xuất thế nào cả. Và Bi đúng là đã chơi rất hay trò chơi của mình, hay đến nỗi có những đoạn cậu làm cả đoàn toát mồ hôi vì bị chinh phục.

Các nhân vật trong Chơi Vơi (kịch bản Phan Đăng Di) và Bi, Đừng Sợ! đều có những ẩn ức, dồn nén tình dục. Anh cho biết quan điểm khi đào sâu về khía cạnh này của các nhân vật.

Đó cũng là những ẩn ức của chính tôi, tôi chỉ đơn giản là đưa kinh nghiệm cá nhân lên màn ảnh để mọi người biết thôi. Khi thể hiện điều này, tôi thấy rất tự nhiên, nhẹ nhõm.

Phụ nữ trong Chơi Vơi và Bi, Đừng Sợ! rất mạnh mẽ, đầy cá tính, trong khi đàn ông lại yếu đuối và ích kỷ. Xin anh nói đôi chút về cách xây dựng nhân vật.

Trong phim của tôi đàn ông thường ưa hưởng lạc và sống vì bản thân nhiều hơn nên nhiều khi họ như những đứa trẻ, không mạnh bằng phụ nữ. Phụ nữ là mẹ, vì thế nhiều khi họ phải chăm sóc cho những đứa trẻ, cả những đứa trẻ là đứa trẻ thật lẫn những đứa trẻ to xác là chồng hay người yêu của họ…

Tôi đang chuẩn bị cho bộ phim mới có tên “Cha và con và….” - một câu chuyện vừa buồn bã, vừa hài hước và cũng có gì điên điên. Tôi vừa cùng quay phim Phạm Quang Minh casting tại Sài Gòn, chúng tôi đã được làm việc với một số gương mặt rất gợi cảm, vì thế lại thấy đầy năng lượng để làm việc.

Ngoài ra tôi cũng sẽ làm sản xuất cho một dự án khác của Nguyễn Hoàng Điệp tên là “Đập cánh giữa không trung” sẽ quay trong năm nay. Điệp chính là sản xuất của tôi trong “Bi đừng sợ!” Lúc quay phim ấy tôi cũng đã “hành hạ” cô ấy rất nhiều, giờ chắc đến lượt tôi sẽ bị cô ấy “hành hạ” đây.
