Submission Deadline Extended To January 15, 2011

IRVINE - The submission deadline for the 5th biennial Vietnamese International Film Festival (ViFF) has been extended to January 15, 2011.

ViFF will take place over two weekends from April 7-10 & 14-17, 2011 at the University of California, Irvine (UC Irvine); University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA); the Bowers Museum, Santa Ana; and Edwards University Cinema 6, Irvine.

PRODUCTIONS ELIGIBLE FOR CONSIDERATION:
Feature-length and short productions of any content (not necessarily related to Vietnam or Vietnamese) by persons of Vietnamese descent living anywhere around the world or productions by anyone about Vietnamese people or culture in the following categories:

- Narrative
- Documentary
- Experimental
- Animation

Films must have English subtitles if they are not in English language.

Entries MUST BE POSTMARKED no later than January, 15, 2011. We will announce the final selection by early March 2011.

Following the success of the first four festivals, ViFF 2011 continues a biennial tradition of celebrating cinema by and about people of Vietnamese descent. With every installment, ViFF (2003, 2005, 2007, and 2009) has showcased approximately forty to sixty films (shorts and features) by filmmakers of Vietnamese descent from the U.S., Australia, Canada, Germany, Israel, and Vietnam, with each edition reaching an audience of more than 4,000. These innovative films are shown in their original language and English subtitles are included for all films in another language.

This year’s theme of “Reel Momentum” captures the momentum created by established as well as emerging filmmakers of Vietnamese descent from around the world. The past decade has witnessed an astonishing increase in the number of films produced by Vietnamese and diasporic Vietnamese filmmakers. Their work has become more diverse than ever with genres such as drama, action, comedy, and thriller that touch on a wide range of themes. This momentum is marked by the strong presence of Vietnamese films screened at leading international film festivals, like Cannes, Venice, Toronto, Sundance, and Tribeca over the past two years.

Through the universal language of cinema, ViFF 2011 celebrates the diversity of our communities by bringing together a multiplicity of perspectives and voices. Committed to expanding the horizons of Vietnamese cinema, ViFF provides a nurturing environment for its artists to engage in a broadening dialogue with an international community. ViFF also serves as an important educational tool for learning about the historical and contemporary experiences of the Vietnamese in the United States and throughout the world.

Đại Hội Điện Ảnh Việt Nam Quốc Tế (ViFF) gia hạn gửi phim đến ngày 15 tháng 1, 2011

IRVINE - Đại Hội Điện Ảnh Việt Nam Quốc Tế (Vietnamese International Film Festival - ViFF) gia hạn gửi phim cho đến ngày 15 tháng 1, 2011, thay vì 15 tháng 12, 2010 như trước đây.

Đại Hội Điện Ảnh Việt Nam Quốc Tế lần thứ 5 sẽ được diễn ra từ ngày 7 đến 10 và 14 đến 17 tháng Tư, năm 2011 tại đại học University of California, Irvine (UC Irvine), University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), Viện Bảo Tàng Bowers, Santa Ana, và rạp Edwards University Cinema 6, Irvine.
ViFF nhận tác phẩm của các đạo diễn đến từ tất cả quốc gia trên thế giới với điều kiện sau đây:

- Phim của đạo diễn người Việt hoặc gốc Việt có thể đề cập bất cứ đề tài nào, không nhất thiết phải mang đề tài về con người hoặc văn hóa Việt Nam.
- Phim của các đạo diễn không phải người Việt hoặc gốc Việt thì phải liên quan đến con người hoặc văn hóa Việt Nam.
- Phim phải có phụ đề tiếng Anh nếu không nói tiếng Anh.

Chúng tôi nhận phim feature và phim ngắn ở các thể loại sau đây:

- Phim truyện
- Phim tài liệu
- Phim thử nghiệm
- Hoạt họa

Không cần đóng lệ phí. Phim đóng dấu bưu điện trễ nhất là ngày 15 tháng 1, 2011.

Mục đích của Đại Hội Điện Ảnh Việt Nam Quốc Tế (ViFF) gồm hỗ trợ và quảng bá những quan điểm, tiếng nói đa nguyên của các đạo diễn gốc Việt Nam. Đại hội cũng hỗ trợ và quảng bá phim mang đề tài về con người hoặc văn hóa Việt Nam.

ViFF do hai tổ chức bất vụ lợi gồm Hội Văn Học Nghệ Thuật Việt Mỹ (VAALA) và Hội Văn Hóa & Ngôn Ngữ (VNLC) tổ chức cách mỗi năm một lần kể từ năm 2003. Mỗi kỳ đại hội trình chiếu khoảng 40 đến 60 cuốn phim do các đạo diễn gửi về tham dự từ nhiều nước trên thế giới như Úc, Canada, Pháp, Đức, Do Thái, Ba Lan, Hoa Kỳ, và Việt Nam. Đại hội thu hút khoảng 4,000 khán giả tham dự từ nhiều nơi trên thế giới.

Mang chủ đề “Reel Momentum”, ViFF 2011 mong sẽ trình bày cho khán giả thấy các nhà làm phim Việt ở khắp nơi trên thế giới đang có “đà” đi lên. Thập niên vừa qua cho thấy số lượng phim của các đạo diễn Việt Nam hoặc gốc Việt đã được dồi dào hơn. Tác phẩm của họ đa dạng hơn bao giờ hết, với nhiềuthể loại như tình cảm, hành động, hài, trinh thám, và kinh dị. Trong vòng 5 năm qua, nhiều phim đã được trình chiếu tại các đại hội điện ảnh quốc tế tầm vóc như Cannes, Venice, Toronto, Sundance, Tribeca.

Nadine Truong Honored at San Diego Asian Film Festival

After watching Jodie Foster’s directorial debut, “Little Man Tate” at the age of 16, Nadine Truong vividly recalls announcing to her aunt her intentions of becoming a director. She describes working at production companies and talent agencies, sifting through script after script of other writers’ works, when she finally decided to attempt her own. Truong subsequently wrote and directed her first short film, “Chopsticks,” and has “been hooked” ever since. Since 2007, she has written and directed “The Muse,” “One Never Knows,” “In the Dark,” “Initiation,” “Eggbaby,” and “Shadowman.”

At the 11th Annual San Diego Asian Film Festival in October 2010, Truong received the inaugural George C. Lin Emerging Filmmaker Award. Lee Ann Kim, Director of the San Diego Asian Film Festival, had been in contact with Truong in the months leading up to the festival, ensuring that Truong would attend. When it was time to announce the George C. Lin Emerging Filmmaker Award, Truong “heard the two presenters describe [her] work, but [she] still wasn’t quite sure. It wasn’t until they actually played clips of [her] films that [her] jaw finally dropped. Despite all the clues, [she] was very, very surprised.”

The San Diego Asian Film Festival lists its values as innovation/creativity, excellence, leadership, creating community, and fun/hip/cool. Truong’s approach to filmmaking–as a collaborative endeavor undertaken by teams rather than individuals–and the emphasis she places on passion, integrity, and honesty with her work made Truong an ideal award recipient of the San Diego Asian Film Festival. Truong draws inspiration from people’s lived experiences, having always been fascinated with “history and researching kings and queens or serial killers or some ordinary person who had happened to have done something spectacular in his or her lifetime.”

In addition to being recognized for filmmaking, Truong is also very active in photography and blogging. In the wake of her most recent award, Truong is currently working on several feature films in various stages of the filmmaking process. A short film idea that has captured her passion involves dolls in stop motion. With all of these projects, Truong anticipates much traveling this year.

George C. Lin, after whom the Emerging Filmmaker Award was named, was a festival director, community activist, arts advocate, and scientist. “George was a champion, a true visionary when it came to supporting talent, and I really felt like he was giving me a wink that night,” Truong noted. “I have so much gratitude and thanks for the entire San Diego Asian Film Festival staff, that I can’t even express it into words.”
