FOOL FOR LOVE (Để Mai Tính), directed by Charlie Nguyen (THE REBEL), follows the travails of earnest ballroom clerk Dung (Dustin Nguyen) as he falls in love and quits his job at a five-star hotel to pursue the affections of a beautiful lounge singer, Mai (Kathy Uyen). In his quest to track down the girl at a beach resort, comedy ensues as the penniless clerk is forced to shack up with a very rich businessman (Thai Hoa) looking for male companionship. A box office smash in Vietnam, this film leaves you laughing out loud while tugging your heart strings in one man’s pursuit of true love.

Ðể Mai Tính’ sắp được chiếu ra mắt tại Hoa Kỳ

WESTMINSTER - Phim “Ðể Mai Tính” (Fool for Love) của đạo diễn Charlie Nguyễn, do hãng Wave Releasing phát hành, sẽ được chiếu ra mắt Hoa Kỳ vào 10 tháng 9, 2010, tại các thành phố, tiểu bang khác nhau, nơi có những cộng đồng Việt Nam đông đảo.

“Ðể Mai Tính” có sự diễn xuất của các tài tử Dustin Nguyễn, Kathy Uyên, Thái Hòa, Charlie Nguyễn, Johnny Trí Nguyễn…

Phim “Ðể Mai Tính” thuộc loại phim tâm lý hài, lãng mạn, xoay quanh những mối tình khác biệt văn hóa (chẳng hạn giữa Việt kiều và người trong nước), những tính toán, cân nhắc trong tình yêu…

Trong cuốn phim “Ðể Mai Tính”, nữ tài tử Kathy Uyên, mới thành công trong phim “Chuyện Tình Xa Xứ” (Passport to Love), đóng vai Mai, cô ca sĩ Việt kiều Ðức, vừa đẹp và gợi cảm, cố gắng vươn lên trong cuộc sống cá nhân và sự nghiệp để thay đổi bản thân, và thành công trên con đường ca hát và tìm được tình yêu đích thực của mình.

Ðóng cặp với Kathy Uyên trong phim này là Dustin Nguyễn, từng đóng trong phim “Dòng Máu Anh Hùng” cách nay ba năm, trong vai Dũng, anh chàng Việt Nam làm công việc tầm thường ở một khách sạn 5 sao, sống vô tư, không tham vọng, luôn tin vào giá trị của tình yêu chân chính… Và một bất ngờ đã đưa đẩy Dũng đến với Mai, mặc dù Mai đã có Antoine, Việt kiều Mỹ (Charlie Nguyễn) sẵn sàng đầu tư để cùng thực hiện ước mơ ca hát và nổi tiếng.

Irvine, Calif. - To commemorate the 35th anniversary of the Fall of Saigon on April 30th, 1975, the University of California-Irvine invites you to a screening of the award-winning*** documentary OPERATION BABYLIFT: THE LOST CHILDREN OF VIETNAM, which tells the significant yet untold story of the $2 million U.S. initiative that airlifted over 2,500 Vietnamese orphans out of a war-torn country from the impending threat of the Communist regime. These adoptees grew up facing unique challenges in America, including prejudice overshadowed by a controversial war and cultural identity crisis. Featuring compelling and insightful interviews of the volunteers, parents, and organizations directly involved, the documentary takes a contemporary look at Operation Babylift and its relevance to international adoption today.

Following the screening, there will be a Q&A with the film’s producer and director, Tammy Nguyen Lee, as well as several others involved in the film, both behind and in front of the camera.
The event is FREE TO THE PUBLIC, but a suggested donation of $5 will go towards the film’s charity, ATG Against the Grain Productions, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that promotes artistic opportunities for Asian Americans and raises funds for international orphanages.

DVDs will also be available for sale for $25. Cash/check only. A portion of the proceeds to to benefit ATG’s supported orphanages in Vietnam.

Thoughts on the First Installment of HIDDEN GENIUS

HIDDEN GENIUS started with a simple idea. One of the main objectives of Cinema Symposium is to bring Vietnamese films to the general public, but an increasing number of ethnic Vietnamese and others interested in Vietnamese history, culture, and society attend film school, inspired by accomplished artists and professionals such as Cinema Symposium’s panelists, past and present. This surge in interest, however, means there is even more competition among aspiring filmmakers for the few opportunities available to present their work. Since the next Vietnamese International Film Festival (ViFF) is not for another year, why not hold a small competition during Cinema Symposium to discover that diamond in the rough, a “hidden genius” among the hundreds of aspiring filmmakers out there? The mission of HIDDEN GENIUS, thus, is to turn that main objective of Cinema Symposium on its head, bringing the aspiring public to the emerging Vietnamese film network.

HIDDEN GENIUS requires a five-minute limit on its submissions for three reasons. The logistical constraints of planning the Cinema Symposium panel to evaluate the films in one evening demanded that the length be a short as possible while sufficient enough to oresent a discernible story. Most film schools require students to produce a thesis, suggesting that there is a plethora of Vietnamese-themed and Vietnamese-produced short films out there in the world. In addition, the constrained length relates to the broader them of this year’s Cinema Symposium: getting in as well as staying in the business of media. Although everyone still privileges the feature-length, the rise of “new media” i.e. the Internet has produced shows that are just a few minutes per episode yet can still tell a quality story. Moreoever, most commercials remain either fifteen or thirty seconds in length. The point is that you can make a good film without becoming a producer’s nightmare, and opportunities such as HIDDEN GENIUS will likely reward you for your wise choices.

The selection committee of HIDDEN GENIUS nominated five short films out of seventeen submissions for the Grand Jury Award, sponsored by the Vietnamese American Arts and Letters Association (VAALA), and the Audience Choice Award, sponsored by Coco Paris LLC. These films hail from four countries - the United States, Canada, Australia, and Vietnam - and, in spite of the specific qualifications of this competition, vary immensely in subject matter and aesthetics. The international range of the nominees is completely coincidental, as they were chosen strictly according to their technical bravado and artistic complexity. Patrick Bergeron’s “Loop Loop” is an experimental panorama filmed from a train ride in Hanoi. Justin Quoc Dang’s “Dice” is a thrilling lesson on the ephemeral nature of glory. Minh Duc Hoang Tran’s “Closed…!” (Nhắm…!” explores the mounting tension between an alienated wife and her oblivious husband. Vu Trung Hoa’s “Water Me” is a tongue-in-cheek memoir of a vacation in Vietnam among friends. Last but not least, Huy Vu’s “Thinking of You” is a lusciously-filmed vignette about a quirky flower shop girl and the elusive “object” of her desire. These films, deriving from the furthest corners from our base in southern California, demonstrate that Vietnamese is indeed a “globalized” nationality, hence the theme of this year’s Cinema Symposium 5 - “Operation Greenlight: Breaking into the World of Vietnamese Cinema.”

Los Angeles, Calif. - UCLA’s Vietnamese Language and Culture (VNLC) and the Vietnamese American Arts and Letters Association (VAALA) present the fifth biennial Cinema Symposium titled “Operation Greenlight: Breaking into the World of Vietnamese Cinema.” Cinema Symposium 5 will be held on Sunday, April 18, 2010 from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Dodd Hall 121 on the UCLA campus. Admission is free and open to the public. Doors open at 2:30 p.m.

The symposium will feature 11 distinguished guests. Our panel includes: Kieu Chinh (Actress/Producer, “Journey from the Fall,” “Sad Fish”, “Time”), Nghiem-Minh Nguyen-Vo (Director, “Buffalo Boy”, “Don’t Look Back”), Mark Tran (Director, “All About Dad”), Orchid Lam Quynh (Actress, “Sad Fish”), Minh Duc Nguyen (Director, “Touch”), Nadine Truong (Director, “Shadow Man”), Danny Do (Producer, “Just Kidding Films”). As a special feature, we will also be streaming “Live” from Saigon the production team from “De Mai Tinh” [Fool for Love], with Dustin Nguyen, Irene Trinh, and Charlie Nguyen. Hidden Genius là cuộc thi phim ngắn với thời lượng tối đa 5 phút. Một bất ngờ đối với ban tổ chức, sau khi ra thông cáo từ đầu năm, cuộc thi đã có sự tham dự của các đạo diễn ở nhiều nơi trên thế giới. Ban tổ chức đã chọn ra 5 cuốn phim xuất sắc vào vòng chung kết. Những cuốn phim này được gửi từ Canada, Úc, Việt Nam và Hoa Kỳ. Chỉ dài từ 3 đến 5 phút, năm cuốn phim mang chủ đề và phong cách hoàn toàn khác nhau. Phim LoopLoop của Patrick Bergeron (Canada) mang tính thử nghiệm với những hình ảnh đan vào nhau của chuyến xe lửa ở Hà Nội. Phim “Xí Ngầu” của Justin Quốc Đặng từ Úc diễn tả sự hồi hộp của một cuộc đỏ đen. “Nhắm” của Hoàng Trần Minh Đức (Việt Nam) diễn tả sự xa cách không thể cứu vãn giữa một cặp vợ chồng. Phim “Water Me” của Vũ Trung Hòa (Hoa Kỳ) thuật lại chuyến đi vacation ở Việt Nam với một phong cách hài hước. Phim “Thinking of You” của Huy Vũ (Hoa Kỳ) kể về “mối tình” chớm nở nhưng một chiều của cô gái trẻ làm trong tiệm hoa. Giải Grand Jury Award, do VAALA bảo trợ, sẽ do các tham luận viên quyết định. Khán giả cũng sẽ bỏ phiếu bầu cho giải Audience Choice Award. Giải này do Coco Paris LLC bảo trợ.

Hội Văn Học Nghệ Thuật Việt Mỹ (VAALA) và Hội Văn Hóa và Ngôn Ngữ (VNLC) thực hiện Cinema Symposium lần đầu tiên vào năm 2002 tại đại học UCLA, và từ đó cách mỗi năm, hội luận lại được hai tổ chức bất vụ lợi này tiếp tục thực hiện vào các năm chẵn. Mục đích của buổi hội luận nhằm tạo cơ hội cho các sinh viên có dịp tìm hiểu thêm về lãnh vực điện ảnh. Vào mỗi năm lẻ, từ năm 2003, VAALA và VNLC đồng tổ chức Đại Hội Điện Ảnh Việt Nam Quốc Tế (Vietnamese International Film Festival - ViFF). Cinema Symposium và ViFF đều nhằm mục đích quảng bá những tác phẩm điện ảnh do các đạo diễn người Việt hoặc gốc Việt thực hiện. Các sinh hoạt này cũng đề cao thành tựu của những người làm trong ngành điện ảnh.

HIDDEN GENIUS: A Short Film Competition

Rules of the contest:

·The entire submission cannot be longer than five minutes (300 seconds) in length. Submissions in excess will be automatically disqualified.

·The film must feature a title and name of at least one director.

·Films that follow at least one of the preferred criteria will be given the strongest consideration
-The director(s) must be of ethnic Vietnamese descent, loosely defined
-The central theme of the film pertains to the Vietnamese experience.

·The films will be evaluated according to their artistic and technical value by the symposium organizational committee. Five short films will be selected to be screened at Cinema Symposium 5 on April 18, 2010 at UCLA.

·Multiple submissions per person or group are permitted, but each submission requires a separate application.

·The film must be comprehensible to an English-speaking audience. Subtitles are acceptable.

·Members of the organizational symposium committee or of the grand jury are automatically disqualified from the competition.

·NO ENTRY FEE!

Instructions for submission:

·Please upload your film onto YouTube and submit an application form providing details about your film (including where to find it) to the symposium organizational committee. If you do not submit an application form, your film will not be considered for nomination.

·If your film is among the 5 short films nominated, you will be contacted by the symposium organization committee to submit a high-quality digital copy of your film to be screened at the symposium and judged by the panelists. These copies will be returned to you. We strongly request that you attend the symposium in order to be honored for your accomplishment.

Two awards will be handed out during the evening:

· Grand Jury Award, a $500 cash prize, will be awarded by the panelists of Cinema Symposium 5, comprised of prominent filmmakers/producers in the Vietnamese film community. The judging will take place at the event.

· Audience Award - a $250 cash prize- sponsored by CocoParis LLC (www.cocoparisllc.com ): At the end of the screening, the audience will vote on their favorite short film. Those votes will be counted and the results announced at the end of the symposium.

The Cinema Symposium is held alternating between the bi-annual Vietnamese International Film Festival (ViFF). It seeks to promote works that are by or about Vietnamese Americans. The event also highlights the achievements of professionals in front of and behind the camera. Their accomplishments in this highly competitive industry help pave the way for other Vietnamese Americans and are an inspiration to many in the community at large.

WESTWOOD - Hội Văn Học Nghệ Thuật Việt Mỹ (VAALA) và Hội Văn Hóa và Ngôn Ngữ (VNLC) tổ chức một cuộc thi phim ngắn nhân dịp Hội Luận Điện Ảnh (Cinema Symposium) lần thứ 5 tại đại học UCLA.

Hội Luận Điện Ảnh được Hội Văn Học Nghệ Thuật Việt Mỹ (VAALA) và Hội Văn Hóa và Ngôn Ngữ Việt Nam (VNLC) thành lập vào năm 2002. Cách mỗi năm một lần, Hội Luận Điện Ảnh được tổ chức xen kẽ với Đại Hội Điện Ảnh Việt Nam Quốc Tế (ViFF), nhằm quảng bá những tác phẩm điện ảnh do các đạo diễn người Việt Nam hoặc gốc Việt Nam thực hiện, hoặc phổ biến những tác phẩm nói về người Việt Nam. Những sinh hoạt này cũng nhằm tạo điều kiện gặp gỡ, trao đổi giữa những người đang làm việc trong ngành điện ảnh và các sinh viên muốn học hỏi thêm về điện ảnh và văn hóa Việt Nam. Các chương trình này cũng đề cao những thành tựu của những người làm trong ngành điện ảnh.

Đặc biệt trong kỳ Hội Luận Điện Ảnh lần thứ 5, ban tổ chức sẽ thực hiện một cuộc thi phim ngắn. Điều lệ cuộc thi như sau:

* Phim dự thi không thể dài hơn năm phút (300 giây). Phim nào dài hơn thời lượng quy định sẽ bị loại.
* Phim phải đính kèm một nhan đề và ít nhất là tên của đạo diễn.
* Những phim nào đạt một trong những tiêu chuẩn sau đây sẽ có có cơ hội được nhận vào cuộc thi:
o Đạo diễn phải là người Việt hoặc gốc Việt
o Chủ đề chính của phim gắn liền với kinh nghiệm liên quan đến Việt Nam.
* Các phim sẽ được ban tổ chức chọn trên giá trị nghệ thuật và kỹ thuật. Năm phim ngắn sẽ được chọn để trình chiếu trong vòng chung kết tại Hội Luận Điện Ảnh lần thứ 5, vào ngày 18 tháng 4 năm 2010 tại đại học UCLA. Phim hay nhất sẽ do các tham luận viên của Hội Luận Điện Ảnh bình chọn.
* Một người có thể gửi nhiều phim tham dự, nhưng mỗi phim phải đi kèm một đơn dự thi riêng.
* Phim cần có phụ đề Anh ngữ nếu không nói tiếng Anh.
* Các thành viên trong ban tổ chức hoặc ban giám khảo không được quyền dự thi
* KHÔNG CÓ LỆ PHÍ!

Hướng dẫn cách nộp phim:

* Tải phim của bạn lên youtube và nộp một bản đơn với đầy đủ chi tiết về phim của bạn (bao gồm bằng cách nào để tìm phim) cho ban tổ chức. Nếu bạn không nộp đơn, phim của bạn sẽ không được nhận.
* Nếu phim của bạn là 1 trong 5 phim ngắn được vào vòng chung kết và chiếu tại buổi Hội Luận, ban tổ chức cần bản chiếu có chất lượng cao. Các bản phim chất lượng cao sẽ được hoàn trả cho bạn sau đó. Chúng tôi rất mong các bạn sẽ có mặt tại buổi Hội Luận để có thể đón nhận những giải thưởng từ ban tổ chức và khán giả!

Hai giải thưởng sẽ được trao ngay tại buổi Hội Luận Điện Ảnh lần thứ 5 vào ngày 18 tháng 4, 2010 tại đại học UCLA:

* Giải Phim Hay Nhất - $500 sẽ được trao tặng bởi các tham luận viên của Hội Luận Điện Ảnh lần thứ 5, bao gồm các đạo diễn, tài tử và nhà sản xuất phim có tiếng tăm trong cộng đồng.
* Giải Khán Giả Bình Chọn - $250, do Công Ty Coco Paris LLC (www.cocoparisllc.com) bảo trợ. Khán giả sẽ bỏ phiếu chọn phim thích nhất. Phiếu sẽ được đếm ngay sau khi 5 cuốn phim vào vòng chung kết được chiếu tại buổi hội luận.

Victor Vu’s Psychological Thriller Begins Production In Saigon

Principal photography has begun for writer/director Victor Vu’s psychological thriller “INFERNO” (Giao Lộ Định Mệnh). The film, produced by Saiga Films, a division of Star Media Group, is being shot entirely in Saigon, Vietnam.

“INFERNO” features an all-star Vietnamese cast, including: Golden Kite Award Winner TRAN BAO SON (Best Supporting Actor, The Legend is Alive), award-winning model/actress VU THU PHUONG (Cô Gái Bất Đắc Dĩ, Shanghai), TANG BAO QUYEN (Passport to Love), award-winning actor/model BINH MINH (Passport to Love, 14 Days, Cô Gái Xấu Xí) and HUA VY VAN (Saigon Love Story).

ABOUT “INFERNO”: The story centers around a man who nearly burns to death and loses his memory in a horrible car accident. As he pieces together his shattered life, he discovers the shocking truth behind his past as well as his own identity.

Victor Vu is the writer and director of such films as “PASSPORT TO LOVE” (Chuyện Tình Xa Xứ), the romantic comedy sensation that swept Vietnam and won Audience Choice and Best Supporting Actress at the 2008 Golden Kite Awards (Vietnam’s equivalent to Oscar.)
