HIDDEN GENIUS: A Short Film Competition

Rules of the contest:

·The entire submission cannot be longer than five minutes (300 seconds) in length. Submissions in excess will be automatically disqualified.

·The film must feature a title and name of at least one director.

·Films that follow at least one of the preferred criteria will be given the strongest consideration
-The director(s) must be of ethnic Vietnamese descent, loosely defined
-The central theme of the film pertains to the Vietnamese experience.

·The films will be evaluated according to their artistic and technical value by the symposium organizational committee. Five short films will be selected to be screened at Cinema Symposium 5 on April 18, 2010 at UCLA.

·Multiple submissions per person or group are permitted, but each submission requires a separate application.

·The film must be comprehensible to an English-speaking audience. Subtitles are acceptable.

·Members of the organizational symposium committee or of the grand jury are automatically disqualified from the competition.

·NO ENTRY FEE!

Instructions for submission:

·Please upload your film onto YouTube and submit an application form providing details about your film (including where to find it) to the symposium organizational committee. If you do not submit an application form, your film will not be considered for nomination.

·If your film is among the 5 short films nominated, you will be contacted by the symposium organization committee to submit a high-quality digital copy of your film to be screened at the symposium and judged by the panelists. These copies will be returned to you. We strongly request that you attend the symposium in order to be honored for your accomplishment.

Two awards will be handed out during the evening:

· Grand Jury Award, a $500 cash prize, will be awarded by the panelists of Cinema Symposium 5, comprised of prominent filmmakers/producers in the Vietnamese film community. The judging will take place at the event.

· Audience Award - a $250 cash prize- sponsored by CocoParis LLC (www.cocoparisllc.com ): At the end of the screening, the audience will vote on their favorite short film. Those votes will be counted and the results announced at the end of the symposium.

About Cinema Symposium:

Cinema Symposium was created in 2002 by VAALA (Vietnamese American Arts & Letters Association (VAALA) and VNLC (Vietnamese Language & Culture) and held every other year at UCLA to create a network between Vietnamese American professionals working in the film industry and students with an interest in film and the Vietnamese culture. The Cinema Symposium is held alternating between the bi-annual Vietnamese International Film Festival (ViFF). It seeks to promote works that are by or about Vietnamese Americans. The event also highlights the achievements of professionals in front of and behind the camera. Their accomplishments in this highly competitive industry help pave the way for other Vietnamese Americans and are an inspiration to many in the community at large.

VAALA và VNLC Tổ Chức Cuộc Thi Phim Ngắn

*Giải thưởng sẽ được trao tại Hội Luận Điện Ảnh lần thứ 5, ngày 18 tháng 4, 2010 tại UCLA*

WESTWOOD - Hội Văn Học Nghệ Thuật Việt Mỹ (VAALA) và Hội Văn Hóa và Ngôn Ngữ (VNLC) tổ chức một cuộc thi phim ngắn nhân dịp Hội Luận Điện Ảnh (Cinema Symposium) lần thứ 5 tại đại học UCLA.

Hội Luận Điện Ảnh được Hội Văn Học Nghệ Thuật Việt Mỹ (VAALA) và Hội Văn Hóa và Ngôn Ngữ Việt Nam (VNLC) thành lập vào năm 2002. Cách mỗi năm một lần, Hội Luận Điện Ảnh được tổ chức xen kẽ với Đại Hội Điện Ảnh Việt Nam Quốc Tế (ViFF), nhằm quảng bá những tác phẩm điện ảnh do các đạo diễn người Việt Nam hoặc gốc Việt Nam thực hiện, hoặc phổ biến những tác phẩm nói về người Việt Nam. Những sinh hoạt này cũng nhằm tạo điều kiện gặp gỡ, trao đổi giữa những người đang làm việc trong ngành điện ảnh và các sinh viên muốn học hỏi thêm về điện ảnh và văn hóa Việt Nam. Các chương trình này cũng đề cao những thành tựu của những người làm trong ngành điện ảnh.

Đặc biệt trong kỳ Hội Luận Điện Ảnh lần thứ 5, ban tổ chức sẽ thực hiện một cuộc thi phim ngắn. Điều lệ cuộc thi như sau:

* Phim dự thi không thể dài hơn năm phút (300 giây). Phim nào dài hơn thời lượng quy định sẽ bị loại.
* Phim phải đính kèm một nhan đề và ít nhất là tên của đạo diễn.
* Những phim nào đạt một trong những tiêu chuẩn sau đây sẽ có có cơ hội được nhận vào cuộc thi:
o Đạo diễn phải là người Việt hoặc gốc Việt
o Chủ đề chính của phim gắn liền với kinh nghiệm liên quan đến Việt Nam.
* Các phim sẽ được ban tổ chức chọn trên giá trị nghệ thuật và kỹ thuật. Năm phim ngắn sẽ được chọn để trình chiếu trong vòng chung kết tại Hội Luận Điện Ảnh lần thứ 5, vào ngày 18 tháng 4 năm 2010 tại đại học UCLA. Phim hay nhất sẽ do các tham luận viên của Hội Luận Điện Ảnh bình chọn.
* Một người có thể gửi nhiều phim tham dự, nhưng mỗi phim phải đi kèm một đơn dự thi riêng.
* Phim cần có phụ đề Anh ngữ nếu không nói tiếng Anh.
* Các thành viên trong ban tổ chức hoặc ban giám khảo không được quyền dự thi
* KHÔNG CÓ LỆ PHÍ!

Hướng dẫn cách nộp phim:

* Tải phim của bạn lên youtube và nộp một bản đơn với đầy đủ chi tiết về phim của bạn (bao gồm bằng cách nào để tìm phim) cho ban tổ chức. Nếu bạn không nộp đơn, phim của bạn sẽ không được nhận.
* Nếu phim của bạn là 1 trong 5 phim ngắn được vào vòng chung kết và chiếu tại buổi Hội Luận, ban tổ chức cần bản chiếu có chất lượng cao. Các bản phim chất lượng cao sẽ được hoàn trả cho bạn sau đó. Chúng tôi rất mong các bạn sẽ có mặt tại buổi Hội Luận để có thể đón nhận những giải thưởng từ ban tổ chức và khán giả!

Hai giải thưởng sẽ được trao ngay tại buổi Hội Luận Điện Ảnh lần thứ 5 vào ngày 18 tháng 4, 2010 tại đại học UCLA:

* Giải Phim Hay Nhất - $500 sẽ được trao tặng bởi các tham luận viên của Hội Luận Điện Ảnh lần thứ 5, bao gồm các đạo diễn, tài tử và nhà sản xuất phim có tiếng tăm trong cộng đồng.
* Giải Khán Giả Bình Chọn - $250, do Công Ty Coco Paris LLC (www.cocoparisllc.com) bảo trợ. Khán giả sẽ bỏ phiếu chọn phim thích nhất. Phiếu sẽ được đếm ngay sau khi 5 cuốn phim vào vòng chung kết được chiếu tại buổi hội luận.
